3BC - Third Baptist Church

Discovery U

Discovery U (DU) is one of our strategies for making MATURE disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ who advance God's Kingdom, by His power, for His glory. DU consists of 6 core MATURE classes and other electives which help disciples grow in their knowledge of God and His word. DU meets in 6 week sessions on Sunday nights from 5:00 - 7:00PM.

DU classes begin on August 15

DU Class Schedule

5:00pm Classes

  1. Adopting Spiritual Disciplines
(led by Dave Odom) Room 212E

A MATURE core course concerning the main spiritual disciplines needed by a
believer to grow in their relationship with Jesus and the body of Christ.

  2. Understanding Your Teenager
(led by Duane Geib) Room 112A

This course is an introduction to Duane Geib and the youth ministry of 3BC. It's specifically for parents of rising 6th and 7th graders, yet good for all parents who have never been introduced to the ministry and philosophy of UNDERGROUND YOUth Ministry. We will discuss youth ministry, resources for parents, changes in a person from childhood to teenager, and a lot of time for questions and answers.

  3. Titus 2:4 for Women (led by Linda Puckett & Emily Baskin) Room 116

Join us as we study various women of the Bible. Come and be encouraged that their trials and struggles are no different than yours. Come and see how God shaped these women and how He longs to shape you.

  4. The End of Days
(led by Mike Lee) Room 212B

An introduction course to the various views of the end times. The theological word is "eschatology", a study of the end times.

  5. The Book of Acts (Part 1): the Establishment of the Church
(led by Sam Spradling) Room 212D

In the first six weeks of DU we will be studying the establishment and growth of the early church. We will conclude with the end of chapter 9 as we look at the conversion and early ministry of Paul. This study of the Book of Acts will be concluded in Session 2 of Fall DU.

6:00pm Classes

  1. Evangelizing the Lost
(led by Steve Hutson) Room 212A

A MATURE core class that examines God's desire for all believers to evangelize their Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

  2. Oo La La: How to Speak French
(led by Mark Moore) Room 212B

A class for the basics of conversational French. While this class is for those who will be going on the mission trip to Belgium in October, anyone can attend.

  3. Loving God and Others
(led by Kim Gaither) Room 116

It's easy to get confused about how to please God. One Bible teacher details a long list of the common commands you should be keeping. Another teacher says that only grace matters. Who is right? Centuries ago, in answer to this question, Jesus simplified all the rules and regulations of the Law into just 2 great commands: love God and love people.
Loving God and Others looks at how these two commands define the heart of the Christian faith. As you rest in the certain knowledge of what God calls you to do, you will be challenged to live these commands out - and discover how obeying Jesus' simple commands will transform not only your life but also the lives of those around you.

  4. Dare to Be Uncommon
(led by Doug Demosi) Room 212E

Tony Dungy says it's time for every man to choose an uncommon life! The Super Bowl-winning coach has spent his life shaping young men. Now, he is ready to share core truths he wants every man to understand, live by, and pass on to others. Examine your life and aspire to a life of renewed integrity, influence, and faith. You'll explore scripture, engage in discussion, encounter character building insights and uncover what it means to live a life of true significance.

  5. "Atheism Remix: A Christian Confronts the New Atheists"
(led by Marty Blakely) Room 212D

The contemporary strain of atheism - the New Atheism - is more popular and widely accepted than previous strains. Atheism Remix provides a Christian response to the movement's four leading thinkers - the "Four Horsemen of the New Atheism Apocalypse" - Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens.

  6. "Micah: God's Timeless Message of Doom and Glory"
(led by Tommy Thompson) Room 212C

For 6 weeks we'll examine the word that God's messenger Micah (whose name means "who is like Jehovah?") gave the people of Judah and Israel. In the book, Micah condemns the sins of the Hebrews and predicts the destruction of both nations. But Micah also predicts the nation's restoration and the arrival of the Messiah, whose "origin is from antiquity, from eternity." We will also encounter in chapter 6 what God really wants from us - the "Golden Rule" of the Old Testament. The beauty of Micah is that this message of God's grace and salvation is as timely and pertinent today as it was over 2700 years ago when these words were inspired by the Holy Spirit.
